  • Cycle Group 37 kms Clyde to Omakau
  • Walking Group - Clyde - a short walk, then Galloway to Chatto Creek 13 kms
  • Registration & Morning Tea (Dunstan RWNZ) at Clyde from 10.15am for 11.00 departure
  • Lunch at Galloway (Cromwell RWNZ) from Noon,  Dinner at the Becks Community Hall, Harold and a team from Life Education will join us,
  • Guest Speaker: Linda Taylor on the recently launched ‘Empower’ programme, which teaches kids about food and nutrition; how to grow, harvest, prepare & share good food. Empower is a collaborative effort between Life Education and Garden to Table. Linda is Executive Officer of Garden to Table.

Day Three

  • Farewell ‘Pool Party’ – the Afternoon Cuppa & Nibbles at end of Trail will be at the Middlemarch Swimming Pool hosted by local Swimming Club.

The bus will be returning to Clyde at 3.30pm on Sunday.

  • Funds will be raised throughout the Event for the Life Education Trust (NZ)
  • Please note that you are personally responsible for hiring of bike and getting to Clyde by 10.15 am on 28th April & away from Middlemarch on 30th April.
  • There will be limited luggage facilities available for transportation between places of accommodation with the “back up crew”. Luggage must be well named & destination clearly marked for each stop over. However, we appreciate those who are able to make their own arrangements.

Rural Women New Zealand would like to remind members and the rural community that there are agencies such as the Rural Support Trust, whose representatives are working closely with farmers to monitor well-being and directing them to relief assistance.

The Rural Support Trust organise community events and one-on-one mentoring, as well as targeted support services. Farmers also have access to IRD flexibility for tax payments during the drought.

“We encourage our members to be there for each other, please keep a close eye on your neighbours, as together we can cope with adverse weather conditions and unpredictable markets,” says Wendy McGowan, National President of Rural Women New Zealand.

Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) has issued a submission to the Government expressing concerns about the impact of the Education (Update) Amendment Bill for rural schools.

The Bill proposes some significant changes to the Act, including allowing for the accreditation of private online charter schools. Under this proposal children as young as five years old will have the ability to elect to receive some or all of their education online. “The risk of online charter schools diverting both students and much needed government funding away from rural schools is something we are concerned about.” says former National President, Wendy McGowan. “Rural schools perform a vital role in their communities, yet many are struggling to cope with the unique challenges of providing education in isolated areas. The Government’s first priority should be in further supporting these schools, rather than seeking out alternative providers, which could challenge their viability” says Wendy McGowan.

In its submission RWNZ says that it doesn’t think that online schools are an acceptable substitute to traditional schools. “In general, we think most children benefit from being able to learn within a traditional school setting where they have the opportunity to socialize and interact with their peers. This is particularly true in rural communities where isolation is a major concern” says Wendy McGowan. “A further limiting factor of online schools is their reliance on a decent level of internet connectivity, something that is lacking in many remote parts of the country” says Wendy McGowan. RWNZ’s submission also outlines concerns that taking children out of the school environment could increase their vulnerability to abuse, neglect in the home and missing out on important primary health interventions, like vaccinations. Research from the United States showing that the academic performance of students at online charter schools is lagging behind those in traditional schools is also referenced in its submission.

RWNZ’S submission also addresses the Bill’s proposal to shift Career Services into the Tertiary Education Commission. “We support the Government in wanting to improve career services to students, but we’re not sure how creating another unit within government will achieve this”, says Wendy McGowan. Changes which RWNZ do support include the introduction of a Statement of National Education and Learning Priorities and changes in the Bill to clarify government expectations around boards of trustees. “These changes will hopefully provide more certainty for schools, as well as consistency for students,” says Wendy McGowan.

Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) has issued a submission to the Government expressing concerns about the impact of the Education (Update) Amendment Bill for rural schools. Read More

RWNZ have also been fundraising through the sale of aftersocks™ to help people affected by the earthquakes. 360 pairs of aftersocks™ have been sold in four weeks, and the total sales and donations have exceeded $12,000.

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) of New South Wales (NSW) have also generously donated $50,000 to the fund.

"For many women, children and families affected by the earthquake it will be a difficult Christmas. CWA of NSW members recently demonstrated concern for the welfare of these families and are truly hoping to spread a little joy through their donation of $50,000, says Annette Turner State President of CWA of NSW.

“The Country Women's Association of NSW and RWNZ share a long and proud history. In April 2017 the Associated Country Women of the World will be holding the South Pacific Triennial conference in NZ of which many CWA of NSW members will be attending as well."

The RWNZ Adverse Events and Relief Fund grants can be applied for from today. The fund is available to individuals, communities and groups to apply for, with a particular emphasis on rural women and children. Click here for the application information.

All requests for funding will be reviewed by the committee: RWNZ Board member, Margaret Pittaway Region 1, Sharron Davie-Martin, Trustee of the Rural Support Trust, Region 2 and Area Leadership Councillor, Melva Robb Region 3. The ex-officio are National President Fiona Gower and National Finance Chair, Rachael Dean.

Eligibility criteria: Applications by RWNZ members only, but may be made on behalf of another person or group. Applications Considered: At each RWNZ Council meeting. Scotlands Te Kiteroa Charitable Grant
Grants are primarily directed towards individuals, groups and organisations in country areas and rural towns. Grants are made for projects and activities in the following categories: children, care, elderly, community, conservation, counselling, education, up to a maximum grant of $1,500.
